Bechdel Test Reflection

Analyze 3 movies or TV show you see this semester. For each movie or TV show, list the questions from the Bechdel (google Bechdel test). These questions are:
 1. Are there two women in the movie who have names?
 2. Do they speak to each other?
3. About something other than men?
answer each question with a reference to the place in the movie where it happened and add a short paragraph summarizing your thoughts overall.

Gilmore Girls:
Are there two women in the movie who have names? Yes there is, Lorelai and Rory, mother and daughter. They are the main characters of the TV show.
2.       Do they speak to each other? Yes, Lorelai and Rory speak to each other all the time during the TV show. For example, in the first episode of season one, you see them talking to each other about Rory going to Harvard and how that is such a big deal to Rory. However, Lorelai, a single mother, struggles on the tuition for Rory’s private school and resorts to asking her parents for money. She has a tough relationship with her parents and left when Rory was born, when Lorelai was sixteen years old.
3.       About something other than men? Of course! The whole show is based off of how Lorelai and Rory live their lives. They talk about man different things, all having not to do with boys.
4.       My Thoughts: I really enjoy this TV series! The way that the lives of Lorelai and Rory are shown really makes you relate, and feel like you know them. Like they could literally be your next door neighbors. That’s what I like about the show, its real. Has really feelings, real scenarios, real chances, everything could literally happen to someone in real life.

Good Doctor:
1.       Are there two women in the movie who have names? Yes, Dr. Claire Browne and Jessica Preston. Jessica Preston is the hospital’s in-house attorney and Vice President of Risk Management. Dr. Browne is a surgical resident at the hospital that forms a special bond with Dr. Murphy, the main character of the TV show.
2.       Do they speak to each other? Yes, they do speak to each other. In last Monday night’s show, episode 2, Dr. Browne had to speak with Ms. Preston about a patient that was having a hard time speaking, but wanted to know where her wife was.
3.       About something other than men?  The two women do happen to talk about something other than men. Like the example I used in the last question, they tend to communicate about patients, they are not on the “friend” level to even bring up boys.
4.       My Thoughts:  I have just started to watch this show, it’s a new show out on ABC. The main character, Dr. Murphy, is a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome. The show is very interesting and shows the wonders of living with autism and the effects it has on the people around Dr. Murphy.

Valor:
1.       Are there two women in the movie who have names? Yes, Nora Madani, a helicopter pilot and Thea, a CIA agent which has been working closely with Madani’s unit.
2.       Do they speak to each other? Yes, they do speak to each other, often. Sometimes it is not nice things, but they do manage to work together. For instance, in the episode Monday, Thea explained that if they did not get out of Somalia, that one of their soldiers would bleed out. So Madani, explains to her that she just has to fix the tail rotor wires and they would be on their way.
3.        About something other than men?  Yes, they do not tend to get along, so talking about men is far from what these two women will be doing. Most of their communication on the TV show is strictly business, on a need to know basis, since Thea works for the CIA.

4.       My Thoughts: Madani is a very good, trained pilot. She knows what her limits are and is a “stone cold bad ass” as her unit friends like to call her. She has a few problems to deal with, like her family’s past and her drug addiction since her injury. Thea is a role model as well.  A strong woman in a position of leadership within the CIA. Overall, I really enjoy this show and will continue to watch and see where this season will take us!
