Diversity Week 6
We were assigned to watch the movie, "Crash." I found it particularly interesting that the lives of many different people, not just by race, but by class and where they lived, were all part of how they interacted with each other. Obviously race is a big portion of the problem to the movie, but each of the biases of the characters allowed the movie to move forward.
Subtlety, the movie allows us to see the characters true intentions and feelings, whereas other characters we are just left to assume how they react. For example, was the detective's mother a drug addict, or did she have a mental disability, or both? I would assume a drug problem, but any can argue the opposite choice.
I believe that the movie used racial profiling and stereotypes in a very misguided way, almost using the general ignorance to different types of cultures. The irony in the movie also plays a huge role in the ignorance of racial biases. For example, when Bullock fell down the stairs in her home and the only person to comfort her in the hospital was the Mexican housekeeper that her character had defamed in the beginning of the movie.
Overall, I enjoyed this movie very much. I found myself watching it "for fun" more than as an assignment.
