Diversity Week 5
As I was watching "Born on the Fourth of July" I kept thinking about my Grandpa, who served in Vietnam. He has told me a story about when he first came back home, a man and a woman both spat in his face. I've never understood why. Whether you agree with why we are fighting or not, those soldiers took a great risk for you. They deserve better than that.
At the beginning of the movie, Tommy was extremely excited to be a Marine and fight in Vietnam. He mentions that he wanted to be a good American, he wanted to fight for his country and serve in the war. He worked really hard to join the Marines. He was a religious man. He married before he left and you can see the effects on him and his wife while he is gone, then he comes home injured.
We were also supposed to watch and discuss the movie, "The Intern". An older man was the intern of a younger working woman. I see this happening today and more in the future as we keep lowering wages, the older, almost or already retired adults, will return to school and become interns of younger people. They will have to do this in order to survive. The fact that she became friends with him makes it all the better. I feel as though in today's society, we could very well have the exact opposite with the older interns.
I enjoyed both movies, and I feel as though I learned a lot from these movies. Both very different, but had important points to address.
